Magdalen Park was awarded an Outstanding rating by CQC in 2017, the first private care home in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire to achieve this accolade, with less than 2% of care homes in the country being awarded the rating.
The home also won the prestigious Pinders Healthcare Design Award for the Best New Build Care Home 2015 in the UK and, more recently, is in the Top 20 Care Home in Yorkshire and Humberside in the www.carehome.co.uk awards
Magdalen Park is a new build nursing home which opened on the 1st September 2014 after an investment of £4.15 million. The home, situated on Magdalen Lane in Hedon, can accomodate upto 70 residents needing residential or specialist dementia care. There is also a respite bed and daycare available.
The groundfloor is split into two units of 12 beds with their own sensory gardens with model animals and an allotment, dining rooms and lounge areas. Inbetween the two units is our 'street scene' which includes a shop called Sweets and Treats, a hair and beauty salon and a pub called the Magdalen Arms. The street scene is a great tool for reminiscence activities for the residents with dementia and are available to use by all the residents with family members. The first and second floors are for residents needing residential care. This area includes a large lounge with a library and computer station, entertainment room, conservatory and dining room. Both the first floor and second floor have outdoor areas, the first with a terrace off the lounge and the second floor having a rooftop garden including an artificial bowls green.
All of the bedrooms are large with full ensuite wet rooms. There are also 2 premier suites specially designed for couples or siblings with their own kitchenettes and living areas, but these can be used individually also. These create a very independent lifestyle and really are a home within a home.
We have a team of fully trained cooks and kitchen staff using the latest restaurant standard equipment providing healthy, tasty menus, with a choice at every meal. These menus are updated with the help of our residents requests. All laundry requirements are also done in-house by our housekeeping team.

Mum had had several stays with you for respite care, and in January 2016 she herself decided she would like to be in the home permanently. This was the beginning of a very happy time for mum. Safe in the care of people who loved her and looked after her every need with such patience and cheerfulness. Mum loved all the activities and joined in whenever she could. This became her new social life! Thanks to the energy and love of Steph and Sophie, Mum felt included and loved! She reported every day to me what they had been doing, and where they had been! Mum never wanted to return to her own home, and never talked about it. She loved her room and once we had put into it all her pictures and some furniture it became home. So, for over a year mum lived happily at the home and I was able to visit her almost every day. I too felt welcomed and part of the family at Magdalen park. Then began the gradual deterioration of health that we hadn't really expected so soon. The staff were so kind and understanding and always kept me informed of details. As death was near, the room was adjusted carefully and extra vigilance was put in place for mum. The last few days were the best it could ever have been. The staff loved mum, made sure she was comfortable and they also loved us as a family, making sure we had food and drinks. The best thing was the room that was offered to us to sleep in and use as a haven. Death was peaceful and dignified, and it couldn't have been better. Thank you all for the love, hugs, care and friendship
Susan (daughter of resident) October 2018
My grandma has been a resident of Magdalen Park Nursing Home for the last two and a half years. As any family who makes the decision for a loved one to move into a care home would attest, it is a period filled with worry about whether the decision was the correct one. We needn’t have worried. The staff made us all, especially my grandma, feel so at ease. They offered us so much support as a family and quickly learned about my grandma’s interests… it wasn’t long before we would walk into the middle of a discussion about the latest tennis match when we went to visit! The fact that everyone from the manager, who is always there to discuss any niggle or worry we may have, to the ancillary staff, know my grandma and our family and welcome us so warmly means when we leave after a visit we know we are leaving her in caring hands. The home has a rooftop bowling green, as well as an extensive street scene. As a family we hadn’t seen anything else like this in care homes we looked at for my grandma.
Rebecca (Resident's Grandaughter on 15th March 2017)
I attended a family forum meeting recently for the first time and they are a really good idea. The staff came across as very competent and reassuring that things (minor) would be looked at. They are very pleasant and greet everyone with a smile. They do a very good job of trying to get everyone involved in the activities. The children's carol concerts were greatly enjoyed by my father in law and he was made to feel special when he was presented with a birthday cake at one of them while the children sang "Happy Birthday" to him. He enjoys being visited by the rabbit.
Elaine (Resident's family on 18th March 2017)
My parents' health has improved enormously since they have moved into Magdalen Park. The staff's care, attention and skill has been exemplary. Good food and a real concern for how my parents pass their time has benefitted them hugely. There is a great range of videos, CDs and books. The gardens and public areas are very well maintained, I am especially fond of the conservatory where the light is very good for my partially sighted mother. There is a high standard of cleanliness. I am greatly impressed and very grateful.
Susan N (Daughter of Resident on 4th July 2017)
From the moment we walked into Magdalen, we knew we had found a home that my grandad would be happy in – especially when we saw the bowling green and in-house pub! The food is excellent and the home is always clean when we go and visit. As we don’t live in the area and therefore not being able to visit as often as we would like to, the communication we get from the home is very reassuring. The level of care my grandad receives is very high and I would recommend Magdalen Park to anyone.
Claire G (Grandaughter of Resident on 5th August 2017)
I have stayed at Magdalen for four weeks respite care. The food has been very good and he's always getting cups of tea. Everyone has been great, really friendly and helpful. The room is very clean, warm, comfortable and nicely furnished. The shower room is great, overall lovely! I have made a good recovery.
Clive (Respite Patient on 7th December 2017)
A beautiful home, with excellent service. The management and nursing staff etc are wonderful, nothing at all is any bother, day or night. The food is very good and every effort is made to satisfy the patients needs.
Robert H (Resident on 7th December 2017)
The home is beautiful. The staff are excellent and always make themselves available for their clients and their families.
Robert S (Resident's Son on 18th April 2018)
I am impressed by how all grades of staff appear smiling, cheerful and helpful despite the difficulties they encounter with the client group.
Linda B (Resident's Wife on 27th April 2018)
A big thank you always to the staff. Without carers, God knows what we would do with ever increasing dementia patients.
David R (Resident's Son on 14th April 2018)
On a scale of 1 to 10 i would award 14!! in respect of ALL aspects of Magdalen Park.
Barry H (Husband of Resident on 10th April 2018)
We don't think we could find a better home for our mum. She is so well cared for in a happy and caring environment.
Hilary (Daughter of Resident on 27th June 2018)
Lovely friendly caring home, I would not change anything, it's a very homely place and the staff are very good.
Kate (Daughter of Resident on 27th June 2018)
Mum's condition can cause her to be difficult at times. She doesn't make use of the excellent facilities provided as she is happiest in her her own room, in an environment she knows. But I know that staff have encouraged her to take part in activities. I feel secure that she is safe and well cared for, more importantly, she feels safe and although she rarely admits it, I think she is happy.
Terry (Son of Resident on 27th June 2018)
Mum has had many periods of respite care here so moving in permanently was a relatively easy transition. The staff helped her to settle as she was really unwell at this point. From the reception to nursing and caring staff and housekeeping we have been treated so kindly and with professionalism. Everyone has been cheerful, helpful and always ready to talk and make suggestions. I can relax now that I know mum is receiving the care she wants and needs and that we can all work together to make her time in Magdalen Park really happy and safe.
Susan O (Resident's daughter) on 16th March 2017
This is a lovely place, as a family, we were really anxious about finding the right place for our mum. However, everyone at Magdalen Park made the choice so easy for us. All the staff are so friendly and caring, they really make you feel like you are one big family, but at the same time maintaining the right amount of professionalism. We feel so relaxed now that mum is in good hands. Very happy.
Susan (Resident's daughter) on 8th March 2017
Having looked at many other homes I have found Magdalen Park to be top quality. The staff are very caring and the home and gardens are always in great shape. The most important consideration is the friendliness of everyone involved in the care of my father. I never get the feeling that anyone is "just doing a job". We are now looking forward to the Summer when the gardens will be in full bloom.
Dennis (Son of Resident) on 18th April 2016
'The girls are helpful especially when they help me with dressing. They also help me make my bed and are very good at giving me a bath. The meals are very similar, the quality is good. Tea, coffee or a glass of juice is always available. I enjoy walking into Hedon with the Activity Team. I've made plenty of friendships here, we also have lots of laughs, especially when using clay, and in other activities'
Anne (Resident) on 3rd January 2017
My father came into Magdalen Park for respite care following a fall (broken wrist) transferring from another care home. We are very happy with the care and attention he is receiving and he has settled in well. The staff have made every effort to understanding his needs and I am particularly impressed by the way their experience are shared so everyone is aware of his situation and character. He is treated as an individual well done and thank you.
Paul (Resident's Son) on 26th January 2017.
It is amazing how quickly my Grandma has settled in. The staff have been extremely kind and welcoming to both her and the rest of the family and the home is wonderful. Her room is clean, tidy and is very homely and the home itself caters superbly for visits from the family, with a beautifully kept garden which has areas for children to play and also a roof terrace and various activities for residents such as the movie room and bowling green. The hairdressers on the ground floor is such a great idea as my Grandma can book and get her hair done to get pampered and the pub was recently booked for her 94th birthday party and it honestly felt as though we had hired somewhere completely different and she thoroughly enjoyed it and the staff were more than happy to help us with arrangements to make it a special day for her. I am overjoyed that my Grandma has become a resident here as I cannot imagine any other home offering her the comforts that this does. Thank you from all the family.
Vicky (Resident's Granddaughter) on 3 February 2017.
Any family looking to put a relative into care would do well to look at Magdalen Park Nursing Home in Hedon. My father has been in attendence for 18 months and despite his natural demise, has been cared for very well.
David (Son of Resident) on 1st November 2016
Both mum and dad have been cared for at Magdalen Park - mum being one of the first residents. The care has always been very good. Sadly, mum died recently and the help and support from the home was very good. The funeral wake was held in the Magdalen Arms and the catering for this, done by the home, was excellent and commented on by several of the guests. The staff are always very pleasant and helpful and various activities are available for the residents.
Sue W (Daughter of Resident) on 19th June 2016
I attended a family forum meeting last night for the first time, these are a really good idea. Nicole came across as very competent, reassuring family members that things (minor) would be looked at. Steph and Charlotte are very pleasant and greet everyone with a smile. Steph does a very good job of trying to get everyone involved with activities. The childrens' carol concerts were greatly enjoyed by my father in law and he was made to feel special when he was presented with a birthday cake at one of them and the children sang Happy Birthday to him. He enjoys being visited by the rabbit.

Paul H (Son of Resident) on 8th May 2016
My dad has a lovely large room with a huge window through which he enjoys watching people come and go, situated on one of the dementia wings. The care staff do a very good job, under difficult circumstances, responding to various situations as the residents' needs and moods dictate. The receptionist is always friendly, welcoming and helpful. The activities team also do a wonderful job, involving every resident (if they are agreeable) in each activity according to their individual ability.
Margaret P (Daughter of Resident) on 3rd May 2016
The care provided to both of my parents has been exceptional. For my mother with dementia, deafness and cannot see so well - the amount of work the team put in to make my mum comfortable and the desire to keep her as mobile as possible is really good.
David N (Son of Resident) on 27th April 2016
Dad is very well cared for and he is happy there. The staff are just brilliant! - very kind and caring. I am kept well informed of his welfare and any issues are very quickly passed to me. The staff treat him with the greatest of respect and they are always available to discuss any concerns I may have. There is a really "feel good" atmosphere amongst all the staff and I love to visit him.
Angela (Daughter of Resident) on 21st April 2016
Mum has been a resident in the dementia care unit for 18 months during which time her general health has deteriorated due to her complex medical conditions. The staff have met the challenges of caring for a lady with no hearing, little sight and no mobility superbly. They take time to accommodate her complex needs when undertaking routine care tasks. I never worry about mum day to day as I know the staff meet mum’s needs and care greatly about her quality of life. The management team should be truly proud of their home and staff.
Norma I (Daughter of Resident) on 11th April 2016
It has been a pleasant stay. The staff have treated me very well and I have enjoyed the meals. I haven't a bad word to say about my stay here.
Chris M (Resident) on 29th February 2016
Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful especially my key worker and the activities team. I want to say a big thank you to all the staff as they have made this holiday so special for me. I will definitely come again as the staff are so helpful to me.
Lisa S (Resident) on 24th February 2016
I have been here a week and I can't find fault with any of the staff or service or food. I am very happy here and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Mrs Mortimer (Resident) on 16th February 2016
The home is so spotlessly clean, it is beautiful. The residents are cared for and enjoy a good social life. There are trips out and resident have drinks in the pub with family and friends. It is a home from home.
Shirley W (wife of Resident) on 5th November 2015
When a member of your family gets dementia and has to go into a home, you hope that you can find a home that will care and attend to them as you would yourself. We like to think that at Magdalen we have found that.
David R, Son of Resident on 22 October 2015
My mum went to Magdalen Park for respite but has been welcomed as a permanent resident as is unable to manage on her own at home All staff without exception have been kind and attentive not only caring for my mother but also caring about her. Personal and necessary care are always carried out to a high standard and the staff also spend time with my mum which I believe is important to her well-being. The level of care provided greatly puts our families mind at rest. Thank you to you all.
Mr J Steele (Son of Resident) on 5th October 2015
Would just like to thank all the staff and Management at Magdalen for making my mams last few weeks special. She was very ill but very independent, and really didn't want to give that independence up!! so was very adamant she wasn't going to stay and it was only staying until she felt a bit better! Well what can I say, because of such friendly staff and lovely surroundings she ended up loving it and everyone who worked there. She was in her element, especially when she got her motorized scooter! She was a very special lady and I am so pleased that she got to spend her final weeks in such a wonderful friendly environment. Thank you so much.
Debbie Suddaby (Daughter of Resident) on 3rd August 2015
I have really enjoyed my stay here at the home. Everyone is so friendly and lovely to me. Even my great grandchildren are so pleased to visit me as everyone is nice to them.
Doreen Barker (Resident) on 8th June 2015
Exceptionally nice place - I agree with others, it really is 5 star. The standards are impressive in every way and the staff are lovely. I am not able to express how happy I am with Magdalen Park. I am not very well but coming here has helped me so much and really lifted a burden.
Peter Dalton (Resident) on 6th May 2015
I have settled in well and the facilities are all good. The food is nice and the staff are very friendly. It is great now the activities are up and running and I love the dominoes club.
Bob Jackson (Resident) on 28th April 2015
I am very pleased with my room and the service. Staff are very helpful and cheerful. The medical service is very good when needed. I am so pleased I have found such a nice home and not too far from my family.
Mrs M Kitchin (Resident) on 21st April 2015
1) From reception lady to ALL staff they could not be better, nothing is too much trouble for anyone. 2) Gives you the impression it is a 1st Class Hotel. 3) Guests are made very welcome anytime. 4) No place better in the area of Hull and I wouldn't be surprised if it is the best in England! 5) I am 89 years old and hope to have my 100th birthday here.
Mr C R Emslie (Resident) on 23rd March 2015
I cannot thank the staff and management enough for making my mum and dad, Sheila and Bill, so welcome at their new home in Hedon.
Debbie Suddaby (Daughter of Resident) on Monday 27th October 2014
My brother in law has improved so much since moving into Magdalen Park. He is shaved each day and smartly turned out, which is a credit to the staff. He is very calm and happy there, the staff always talk to him. My sister is so happy and relaxed in herself. If her husband is happy so is she. Thank you to all the staff.
Michael Robertson (Brother-in-law of Resident) on Friday 24 October 2014
