Jill’s Story

Jill who is a resident at our Louth Manor Care Home wanted to tell her story for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October 2023).

“I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, I wasn’t surprised as it ran in my family, but it did not stop me from being terrified. I had a pain in my breast, and being like most women I ignored it thinking it was just a niggle and would go away. When I finally got checked I was given the news it was Cancer. Unfortunately, it was so advanced I had no option but to have a mastectomy straight away and then a heavy bout of chemo. No amount of thanks will ever be enough to the medical staff who looked after me. I am now 4 years in remission and living life. Breast Cancer awareness is so important and needs to be talked about. Please, please check yourself. It doesn’t take long but it can make the difference between catching Cancer early and not having a mastectomy and can also save your life”.

As part of our company-wide initiative this year across our group of Care Homes ‘Together We Can’ helping and supporting our residents and employees achieve things that they didn’t think was possible, prompted Jill to tell and share her story and to ask if she could do something to raise funds for Breast Cancer.

With the help of management and the activity team at our Louth Manor Care Home, the team helped Jill to organise a ‘Coffee, Cake & Pink Day’ fundraiser at the home.

The day received an overwhelming response and was a great success and Jill raised £196 for the Breast Cancer Charity.

A huge thank you to everyone for supporting Jill at her first-ever fundraising event, now she has the bug and would like to hold this as an annual event, and said next year she’s going to make it even bigger!

Well Done Jill you make our hearts warm with your strength and kindness from all at Yorkare Homes.
