Recreating Doreen’s working days at the Thorntons shop at our Magdalen Park Care Home in Hedon.
As part of the 2024 Yorkare Homes company-wide initiative ‘Inspire 24’ they are helping to support residents to achieve things they didn’t think were possible. Dream it, Wish it, Do it.
Our Magdalen Park Care Home had made their resident Doreen’s wish come true by turning back the clock and recreating a Thornton’s shop within the home so that Doreen can relive her Thornton’s working days greeting and serving customers.
Doreen loves to share stories about her working days as a young lady and mentioned that she would love the opportunity to work inside a Thornton’s shop again, as these were some of her happiest working days. The home couldn’t miss out on this opportunity for Doreen and set about decorating their in-house convenience store into a traditional Thornton’s Shop.
Doreen slipped back into her trusty old overcoat and rocked it like a true Thornton’s legend. Customers were welcomed with her signature smile as she dived right back into helping and serving her customers throughout the day.
Doreen added, “This has been a morning of fantastic vibes, and the memories came flooding back, and dreams can still come true even at my age, and the sweetest moments can happen when you least expect them, thank you for making this such a special day for me”.
Doreen’ story has gone truly global since we shared the story on the Homes Facebook page, with coverage from BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Look North, ITV News, Channel 5 News, and has even been covered across the pond in the US with Fox News!
