All our homes have marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day this week with a series of heartfelt and vibrant celebrations, honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who served in World War II.
Residents enjoyed a variety of commemorative events, ranging from poignant remembrance and reminiscence services to lively street parties adorned with Union Jack bunting, live musical performances, and an array of classic British fare — with fish and chips proving to be the firm favourite of the day.
Guest speakers from the Royal British Legion were warmly welcomed into several homes, offering powerful reflections on the legacy of the war and the significance of VE Day. Their contributions added a deeply meaningful touch to the day’s events and were met with gratitude from residents and staff alike.
A particularly moving moment took place at Tranby Park Care Home, where resident Jim, a former Royal Marine, was presented with a replacement beret and set of medals by the Hessle branch of the Royal British Legion. Jim had been forced to part with these treasured items after the war. The emotional presentation was a testament to the enduring respect and gratitude shown to veterans across the homes.

The success of the commemorations was made possible by the tireless efforts of all our staffing teams, who spent weeks planning and preparing. Their dedication ensured that every resident could take part in a day that balanced celebrating with solemn remembrance.
We are incredibly proud of all our teams, Their commitment to creating meaningful experiences for our residents is what made these VE Day celebrations so special. From the decorations and entertainment to the personal touches and veteran tributes, this was a day to remember for everyone involved.”
The events served not only as a tribute to history but also as a celebration of community spirit, bringing together residents, staff, families, and local guests in a shared moment of reflection and joy.
