Yorkare Homes Carer leading campaign against ‘period poverty’ in Nigeria

We’re incredibly proud of Eshe Iluokhauno, a Senior Carer at our Beverley Parklands Care Home, who has launched a life-changing charity to support young girls in Nigeria facing period poverty.

With 18 million children out of school in Nigeria – 60% of whom are girls – Eshe’s mission is to ensure girls can attend school with dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity, by providing free sanitary products and educational support.

His campaign has received overwhelming support across all Yorkare Homes with staff, residents and families generously donating sanitary towels and tampons to the cause. We’re also thrilled that Care Connection Partners, a healthcare recruitment agency working closely with us, donated £500 to help purchase more products.

Eshe founded the charity, Refreshing Heart for Support and Sustainable Development Initiative (RHSSDI), setting up a leadership board of passionate individuals with charity experience, and hopes to return to university to study social work to further his impact in Nigeria long-term.

Sammi Atkin, Manager at Beverley Parklands said “When I heard about what Eshe was doing, I was blown away. A lot of our staff are from African nations, and the thought of girls growing up without basic hygiene products is heart breaking. We’ve had a great response already, with many staff stepping in to help.”

Eshe’s inspiring story has already reached many through features in the Hull Daily Mail and an interview on Beverley FM with presenter Rachael Campey, alongside Teressa from Care Connection and our very own Activities & Events Lead, Vicky.

Donations are always welcome at all our sites, Eshe and the people he supports are truly grateful for the kindness and generosity of our communities.
